The flood, which was caused by over 11 hours of heavy rainfall, submerged many buildings, destroyed properties worth millions of naira, and washed away farmlands. Residents blamed the construction firm working on a nearby road for channelling the floodwater into their community instead of the River Niger.

“I have never witnessed this type of flood in my 25 years of living in this community,” said Dr. Alex, a landlord in the area. “The floods pulled down many fences and walls, and broke into a building where a family of five was living. The mother and her three children were swept away, but fortunately, the children were found alive and are recovering in the hospital.”

The Vice President of the Ugwu Mkpume Achalla Agu Landlords’ Association, Ifeanyi Oghota, described the incident as “unfortunate” and “regrettable”. He appealed to the state government to come to their aid.

The Member representing the community in the House has been notified, and the community has been asked to write a letter of complaint to the state government. The residents are calling on the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to come to their rescue.
