Ecuador, one of South America’s most consistent sides, had taken the lead early in the first half through their captain, Enner Valencia. The experienced striker burst forward on a quick counterattack, beating US defender Chris Richards before drilling a low shot into the far corner to put his team ahead.

Despite falling behind, the Americans grew stronger as the game progressed, displaying better coordination and pressing.
