Angry fans over the weekend attacked the Oyo State Sports Council Chairman, Gbenga Adewusi, after a match at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan between the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and MFM Football Club ended in a draw.

The result left 3SC 10th on the Nigerian Professional Football League table, while MFM wallows on the 20th spot.

The visiting team, MFM scored a late
equaliser on the 92nd after 3SC took the lead in the first 42nd minutes.

The victim, Adewusi informed newsmen that he was attacked because fans of the Ibadan club believed that he sold the game.

He added that the 3SC fans wanted him to make their club win at all costs despite not being the coach.

He stated that some of the hoodlums accused him of making them lose N5m in online betting.

“I was at the stadium for the game between 3SC and MFM, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Some fans of the 3SC club attacked me over that match.

“Their accusation was that I was the one who sold that match to MFM, who are 20th on the table and they said that I made them lose over N5m in the game that they played on an online gambling app.

“I was battered by the hoodlums and was almost killed. I ran to the dressing room, but they wanted to destroy the dressing room. This was a stadium that was just renovated by the Oyo State Government and the fans wanted to destroy it,” he said.

There was blood on Adewusi’s face after the attack at the stadium and he was rushed to a hospital, according to newsmen.

Wasiu Olatunbosun, the state’s Commissioner for Information
described the incident as a tragic one on confirming it, adding that the police were already handling the matter.

He said:

“I am aware of what happened to Honourable Asewusi and it is a sad development. What I know is that the law will take its course and justice will be served. The police are already investigating this matter and I tell you, there will be justice.”

The state police spokesperson, DSP Asewale Onifeso also announced the police were investigating the matter.

He said:
“The case is under investigation and you will be updated.”
