A former Governor of Ekiti State, Olusegun “Segun” Oni, has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), completing his registration at his Ifaki Ekiti country home on Sunday.

Oni, who governed Ekiti from 2007 to 2010 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) governorship candidate in 2022, finishing second to Governor Oyebanji.

Speaking on Oni’s registration, APC e-registration Coordinator in Ekiti, Gold Adesola Adedayo, described the former governor as a respected and popular grassroots leader whose entry would significantly strengthen the party and reinforce its winning momentum.

“Registering former Governor Segun Oni today is a major boost for our electronic registration programme. He is well-loved at the grassroots, and his presence will attract more members into APC,” Adedayo said.

The commissioner also hailed Oni’s defection as a strategic masterstroke that could enhance Governor Oyebanji’s victory prospects in the upcoming June 2026 governorship election.

He urged party leaders to sustain vigorous mobilisation to consolidate APC’s numerical strength ahead of future polls.

Segun Oni’s move is seen as a critical political realignment in Ekiti, signaling APC’s growing dominance and readiness for both the 2026 governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
