former Manchester United and Rochdale midfielder, Joe Thompson, has passed away at the age of 36 after a long battle with cancer.

Thompson was diagnosed for the third time in April 2023, four years after he retired from professional football in 2019. He had previously beaten the disease twice during his playing career.

Beginning his football journey at the age of nine, Thompson came through the Manchester United academy system before moving on to Rochdale, where he spent the bulk of his 13-year career.

Rochdale, where Thompson first signed in 2005, also highlighted the courage and strength he displayed both in life and on the pitch.

“He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch.”His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.”
