An early morning accident in the Alausa area of Ikeja, Lagos, over the weekend left four passengers seriously injured when a fully loaded commercial bus crashed into a streetlight pole, reportedly due to drunk driving.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the bus, bearing registration number KTU 69 YJ, lost control and collided forcefully with roadside infrastructure.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was heavily intoxicated, which caused the high-impact crash that shocked bystanders.

Among those most critically injured were a couple seated in the middle row, along with another male and female passenger. LASTMA operatives nearby quickly responded, providing emergency aid and stabilizing the victims before transferring them to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). The injured were then taken to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for medical treatment.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and other passengers sustained minor or no injuries.

The Lagos State Police Command’s Alausa Division secured the scene throughout the rescue operation to facilitate emergency response and preserve evidence for further investigation.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki strongly condemned the act of driving under the influence, reiterating the agency’s commitment to preventing such incidents through continuous advocacy and intensified monitoring of commercial drivers across Lagos motor parks.

“Don’t Drink and Drive,” he urged, emphasizing the role of LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit in educating drivers on road safety.

Mr Bakare-Oki expressed sympathy to the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery, while appealing to all commuters and drivers to always prioritize safety on the roads.

The Imo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 147 suspects involved in various crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, rape, and child trafficking, as part of intensified security operations across the state.

In addition to the arrests, police recovered an arsenal of weapons comprising seven AK-47 rifles, three AK-47 magazines, seven pump-action guns, seven locally made long guns, 178 live cartridges, and other items from the suspects.
