Fresh Anti-Nigerian Protests Rock Ghana Despite Mahama’s Assurances

Fresh protests have erupted in Ghana demanding that Nigerians leave the country, barely weeks after earlier demonstrations and despite repeated assurances from Ghanaian authorities.

The unrest is unfolding just a month after Ghanaian President John Mahama assured Nigeria that his government would not tolerate xenophobia, pledging to protect Nigerians and their businesses.

In July, Ghanaians took to the streets in similar protests calling for Nigerians to be expelled. President Mahama, in response, assured Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Accra, that Ghana remained committed to the safety of foreign nationals.

However, new footage circulating online shows locals reigniting anti-Nigerian sentiment. In one clip, a man is heard accusing Nigerians of worsening conditions in Ghana, while in another, a woman is seen criticising Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

The protests raise fresh concerns about the safety of Nigerians living in Ghana and the effectiveness of Mahama’s commitment to stamping out hostility.
