Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, has responded to allegations made by President Bola Tinubu in a broadcast yesterday, where the president declared a state of emergency in the state.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara denied claims that he did nothing to dissuade criminal groups and militants from making good their threats to attack oil installations.

He stated, “It is on record that Governor Fubara has nothing to do with the threats by militants and also did not in any way ‘telegraph’ the reported attacks on any oil facility in the State.”

Fubara also clarified that the new Rivers State House of Assembly complex is nearly 80% completed, contrary to claims that he abandoned the project.

He explained that the decision to rebuild the complex was made after experts’ reports and consultations with lawmakers, adding that “the former Governor and now FCT Minister repeatedly criticised the dilapidated and leaking Assembly Complex, and during the commissioning of the Assembly Quarters in August 2022, challenged the lawmakers to take responsibility for the poor state of the edifice, rejecting requests to rebuild it to ensure a conducive legislative environment for the lawmakers.”

The governor attributed some developments in the state to a controversial comment made by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, about the Ijaws, saying he refused to tender an apology when the people asked him to do so.

Fubara listed other instances where Wike’s supporters allegedly stoked tension, adding that his own loyalists maintained calm.

Fubara emphasised his commitment to peace, security, and good governance in the state, saying, “His commitment to total peace and good governance in the State has contributed significantly to increased oil production and revenues for the country since May 29, 2023, as the continuous rise in the accruable revenue from the State into the Federation Account has shown over the months.”

Legal Experts Condemn Tinubu’s Removal of Fubara, Declaration of Emergency

President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the subsequent removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara have been widely condemned by legal experts.

The senior lawyers argue that the President’s action is unconstitutional and that the Constitution does not give him the power to remove a duly elected governor.
