The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed that the nationwide ban on the production and sale of sachet alcoholic beverages will take full effect from December 31, 2025.
Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Directorate, made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. He clarified that the temporary suspension of the ban, which was approved by the Ministry of Health, is only in place until the end of 2025.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025. After this date, full enforcement of the ban will begin,” Azikiwe explained.

He emphasized that the temporary relaxation was introduced to give producers and regulators enough time to collaborate for a more efficient enforcement process.
“The minister granted this temporary relief to give manufacturers and regulators time to collaborate and ensure a more structured and effective implementation of the ban,” he said.
Azikiwe also cautioned the public against believing claims that the ban has been permanently removed, stating that such reports are misleading.
As part of NAFDAC’s efforts to prepare for the ban, awareness campaigns have been launched across the country. The agency has also engaged alcohol distributors, reminding them of the importance of responsible sales practices.
“We have sensitised distributors and stressed that alcohol should not be sold to anyone under 18, as clearly stated on product labels,” Azikiwe added.
He went on to commend the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for its cooperation in educating the public on the matter.
According to NAFDAC, sachet alcoholic drinks and similar products in containers smaller than 200 millilitres will be completely phased out after December 2025, as part of broader efforts to control alcohol consumption and safeguard public health.
