Gabon Coup: Military Appoints Head of Transition Government

Gabonese Military has appointed a head of transition of power in Gabon hours after seizing power from President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

The Head of the Republican Guard, Colonel Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was chosen by his colleagues to lead the transition of power in Gabon.

The army took power on Wednesday morning citing the deteriorating social environment in the country.

They also claimed that the August 26 presidential election was rigged.

The country’s election commission announced at midnight on Tuesday that Bongo had won 64.27% of the vote, compared with 30% for opposition candidate Ondo Ossa.

As reported by the Cameroon news agency, Nguema’s position at the top of the Republican Guard was to protect the president.
