Firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service were called into action after a sudden gas explosion triggered a massive fire that gutted a residential building in Temidere community, Reke, Asa Local Government Area.

According to the Fire Service, the emergency call was received at about 4:27 pm on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The affected building comprised three-bedroom flats, all of which were severely damaged by the explosion and the resulting fire.

Preliminary findings by fire officials indicated that gas leakage caused the explosion before the fire spread rapidly through the building.

“Our officers responded promptly and engaged the fire immediately. The containment operation helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings,” the Kwara State Fire Service said in a statement.

Firefighters were able to bring the situation under control, saving surrounding properties in the neighbourhood from destruction.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service urged residents to take gas safety seriously, warning that negligence often leads to avoidable disasters.

“Residents must regularly inspect gas cylinders, hoses, and regulators. Once leakage is suspected, gas supply should be shut off immediately,” he cautioned.

The Fire Service also advised residents to ensure proper ventilation and avoid the use of expired or faulty gas equipment, stressing that strict adherence to safety measures can prevent loss of property and lives.
