The recall was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Ghanaian Presidency in Accra, which said the decision takes immediate effect.

According to the statement, Ahmed, who was an aspirant in the primaries, was recalled over his alleged involvement in irregularities while serving as a public officer, a situation the Presidency described as incompatible with the government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

The Presidency noted that the decision was taken to avoid any perception of impropriety and to protect the integrity of public office, stressing that Ahmed’s continued stay in office was no longer tenable under the circumstances.

It added that although allegations of vote-buying were made against several aspirants who participated in the primaries, the government considered it necessary to act decisively in line with established ethical standards.

The recall followed reports of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries held on Saturday in the constituency.

The statement further disclosed that the President directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to effect the recall after the NDC’s General Secretary announced that the party had commenced investigations into the allegations arising from the primaries.

“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act to preserve the integrity of public office,” the statement said.

It added that all necessary diplomatic and administrative steps had been initiated to give effect to the directive.
