Gombe Govt Saves 14-Year-old Girl Forced Into Marriage

  • A young girl has been saved from an abusive marriage, after being married off as a third wife.

  • It was gathered that the girl had been married off to a Taraba man, an act which violates the Nigerian law.

The Gombe state government has swung into action, following a reported case of child molestation and marriage.

According to reports, the 14-year-old girl was married off to a man as his third wife by her grandfather and parents.

Confirming the rescue on Friday, May 23, the Gombe Women affairs and Social Development commissioner, Asma’u Iganus noted that the husband had filed a legal complaint against the girl for fleeing his house.

She said this while supporting the victim by giving her some relief items, including bags of rice, maize, packs of sugar, macaroni, insecticide-treated nets, wrappers and stoves, among others at the ministry.

She said;

“The Gombe state government is standing firm against all forms of child rights violations, including forced and underage marriages, rape, and all Gender-Based Violence,”

“We have mobilised a legal team to ensure that this child is protected and allowed to study because that is what she wants.”

The man used to invite some people into the room to help him tie her up on the bed and r3pe her without her consent,”

 

“You can see the scars on both her wrists. We will not allow that to continue. We are going to Taraba to defend her and ensure that the girl is protected by challenging any proceedings that violate her rights.”

“The Gombe State Governor and the First Lady are not taking violence against women and girls for granted. Their actions demonstrate this administration’s dedication to combating child rights violations and promoting the well-being of citizens,”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Command, on Friday, May 23, 2025, arraigned three employees of a first-generation bank alongside four others for allegedly conspiring to defraud Wema Bank Nigeria Plc of N8.5 billion.

 

The accused—Samuel Ihechukwu Asiegbu, Fabian Chizaram Onyeimachi, and Kingsley Kelechi Ejim—were brought before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
