Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state has ordered the construction of Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Federal road in Umuahia.

The direction followed the deplorable nature of the federal road which has caused hardship to the users of the road.

The death of a student of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) was reportedly caused by a truck that fell at one of the bad portions of the road.

Students of MOUAU had taken to the streets of the on Monday to protest the loss of their friend to the bad road.

All that has precipitated Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to order the commencement of work instantaneously on the road.

Okezie revealed this via a statement by Chief John Okiyi Kalu, the Commissioner for Information.

Governor Okezie had demanded Elder Bob Ogu, the State Commissioner for Works a few days back to assess the level of palliative work to be done on the road.

Upon receipt of the assessment, an indigenous company was commissioned to start fixing the road without any delay as Chief Kalu made in his disclosure.

Okiyi added that the Governor had, therefore, pledged to fix the road amid condoling the students over the disastrous happening.

Okiyi statement reads: “Early last week, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu invited the State’s Commissioner for Works, Elder Bob Ogu, to a meeting in his office and directed him to mobilize a contractor to immediately execute palliative repairs of failed portions of Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia, after receiving reports on the terrible state of the federal road leading to the prestigious Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), and the attendant hardship experienced by commuters who use the road that also links our state to some neighboring states. ”

“After assessing the work to be done there, the Honorable Commissioner reverted to the Governor last Friday and informed him that they would have to get written permission from the Federal Ministry of Works before commencing work as the said road has already been awarded by the federal government and handed over to the contractors who are claiming that adequate funds have not yet been provided for commencement of the work…… ”
