Opposition alleges move is politicisation of monarchs ahead of 2027 elections
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has presented brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to all former deputy governors of the state while also approving a pay increase and enhanced medical benefits for traditional rulers.
The gesture, unveiled during a ceremony at Government House, Uyo, was described by the governor as recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of past deputy governors to the development of the state. He stressed the importance of their continued support in sustaining peace and development under his administration’s ARISE Agenda.

Among those who received the SUVs were Ambassador Etim Okpoyo, Noble Lady Valerie Ebe, Mr Moses Ekpo, and Obong Nsima Ekere. Obong Ekere, in appreciation, assured the governor of his unwavering support.
Governor Eno further swore in Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, the paramount ruler of Abak Local Government Area, as chairman of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers (SCTR), pledging increased monthly allowances for monarchs effective from October 1 and the appointment of personal assistants for each paramount ruler.
However, opposition figures faulted the initiative, describing it as a political strategy to infiltrate the traditional institution.
According to Comrade Nkaiso Abia of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eket Senatorial District, “The governor’s strategy is to politically infiltrate the traditional system to weaken the ranks of members with enough carrots as a bait for smooth sailing in his 2027 re-election.”
