In a bid to resolve the ongoing impasse over the proposed new minimum wage, governors of the thirty-six states have scheduled an emergency meeting for today, Wednesday, at 7pm in Abuja.

This comes after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) stepped down the memo on minimum wage on Tuesday, citing the need for further consultation with stakeholders, including local governments, states, and the organized private sector.
The governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposal of ₦62,000, stating that some states would have to borrow to pay salaries if implemented. On the other hand, the organized labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), is insisting on a minimum wage of ₦250,000.
The meeting of governors is seen as a crucial step in resolving the minimum wage impasse, as the organized labour is also scheduled to meet today to discuss the outcome of the FEC meeting and decide on their next course of action.
The outcome of these meetings is expected to determine the direction of the minimum wage negotiations and the potential impact on the nation’s workforce.
