  • Cleric insists his engagement with bandits was authorised and aimed at peace.

  • Reveals that 600 armed bandits once agreed to surrender during a state-backed intervention.

A renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has fiercely attacked those demanding his arrest over his continued involvement and commentary on banditry and national security.

Gumi, in a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, said he committed no crime by engaging bandits in discussions aimed at restoring peace in troubled northern communities. He dismissed his critics as “spineless, irresponsible and unpatriotic imbecilic people” who prefer outrage to truth and lack the courage to confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

According to him, those pushing for his arrest are driven by bigotry, ignorance, and intolerance for opposing views. He argued that rather than examine his peace interventions, his critics have chosen to politicise them.

Recounts State-Backed Peace Mission

Gumi recalled a major intervention he led in January 2021 at Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He said he was escorted by the then Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, who represented the Inspector-General of Police during the operation.

According to him, the meeting brought together over 600 armed bandits and their commanders, who agreed to lay down their weapons in exchange for security guarantees and basic amenities.

He stressed that the negotiation was transparent, legitimate, and conducted with the full knowledge and approval of relevant security authorities.

Gumi maintained that engagement remains a necessary tool for de-escalating violence and reducing attacks on local communities, adding that history will vindicate his approach.
