Unidentified gunmen beheaded a 65-year-old man identified as Nnoruoka Onyeokwu, in the Ubudom Atta community in the Njaba Local Government Area of Imo state.

The man’s head was displayed at the community’s primary school after he was beheaded.

The incident on Saturday added to the community’s anxiety, which had already been shaken by a wave of violence and killings since last year.

According to a community leader who confided in our correspondent on Monday, the victim was attacked in his house in the middle of the night, and the villagers awoke the next day to find his severed head dangling at the premises of the primary school in the village.

“The man was attacked at night in his house,” according to the source. People awoke the next morning to find his severed head on display at the primary school. Nobody knew who had attacked him or why he had been beheaded.

The neighborhood is in a state of panic. People are fleeing because they are afraid of the unknown. This is extremely unfortunate.”

Micheal Abattam, the state police spokesperson, had yet to respond to an inquiry about the murder incident at the time of filing this report.

This comes barely a month after the community’s traditional ruler, Edwin Azike, was kidnapped on December 8 and his body was dumped in the market square the next day.

Gunmen also attacked and burned a police division headquarters, a magistrate’s court, and a community health center in June.
