A police sergeant, Aminu Yusuf, serving as an orderly to a Chinese expatriate, was shot dead by suspected armed robbers on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, in Benin City, Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. along First East Circular Road, shortly after the expatriate had completed a cash withdrawal from a commercial bank located on Sapele Road.
According to sources, the late officer was officially attached to a private company for an authorised police escort assignment. He was accompanying the expatriate during the movement of a substantial sum of money, said to run into millions of naira, when their vehicle was ambushed by four armed men.

The assailants reportedly opened fire, killing Sergeant Yusuf on the spot. They also made away with his AK-47 rifle (breech number BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and the withdrawn cash.
The sergeant was rushed to a specialist hospital in Benin City, where he was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited in a mortuary.
A source familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the police officer had been tasked with escorting the expatriate as part of a routine cash movement from the bank.
As of the time of filing this report, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, had yet to officially comment on the incident. However, police sources revealed that a manhunt has been launched for the attackers, and efforts are ongoing to recover the missing weapon and stolen funds.
Panic as Timber Truck Falls in Umuahia Market
Tragedy was narrowly avoided on Tuesday when a truck transporting timber materials crashed at the Umuahia Timber Market while attempting to enter the premises.
The accident occurred as the long vehicle tried to negotiate its way through a dilapidated entrance point into the market. The truck lost balance and toppled over, causing its heavy timber load to spill onto nearby tricycles and stalls, destroying food items and other property.
