Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers and immediately began firing at the security post, causing panic in the area.
According to residents, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, forcing people nearby to flee for safety as the shooting continued.
The incident was later confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed that two officers who were stationed at the checkpoint lost their lives during the attack.
He also revealed that the gunmen destroyed the security facility by setting the checkpoint tents on fire.
“They killed two of our officers and burnt down the checkpoint, but the police are on top of the situation. I will issue further details,” Usman said.
Security sources say authorities have begun monitoring the situation while efforts are being made to track down the attackers responsible for the Kebbi border checkpoint attack.
The latest incident is the third reported attack along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje border corridor in recent times.
Earlier incidents in the same area reportedly involved attacks on officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service, where security personnel were also killed.
The repeated attacks have raised fresh concerns among residents and travellers who use the route regularly, with many calling for stronger security presence along the border communities.
As of the time this report was filed, security agencies were yet to release further details about the attackers or possible arrests connected to the Kebbi gunmen attack.
