The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a public health advisory cautioning Nigerians against the dangers of excessive salt consumption, following a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), encouraged his followers to increase their salt intake.

In the video, which was shared widely across social media, Pastor Oyakhilome told his congregation during a church service: “They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium; Salt is not your enemy.”

In response to the video, the Ministry of Health urged Nigerians to adhere to scientifically supported dietary guidelines, highlighting the severe health risks linked to excessive salt consumption.

A statement from the Ministry, signed by Alaba Balogun, the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, emphasized the importance of addressing misinformation that could potentially harm public health.

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has observed a widely circulated video in which a respected religious leader discourages Nigerians from heeding medical advice on salt consumption. While we deeply respect the important role of faith and religious leaders in our society, it is crucial to correct misinformation that poses a risk to public health,” the statement read.

Balogun went on to explain that while salt is necessary for the body due to its sodium content, overconsumption can lead to a range of serious health conditions.

“Excessive salt intake is linked to high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and more,” he cautioned.

He further referenced global health guidelines, quoting the World Health Organization’s recommendation that adults should not consume more than 5 grams of salt per day, which is roughly equivalent to one teaspoon.

The Ministry encouraged Nigerians to consult qualified health professionals for proper dietary guidance and to critically evaluate claims that lack scientific evidence.

This advisory serves as a reminder for the public to follow evidence-based health practices and be cautious of misleading information, especially when it comes from influential figures.
