The storm caused significant destruction, blowing off roofs from buildings, pulling down perimeter fences, and damaging electricity supply cables in multiple locations.
Eyewitnesses said many storey buildings were among the structures severely affected, with some suffering major structural damage during the storm.
One of the affected residents, Nurudeen Murtala, said the roof of his house was completely blown off by the strong winds.
“The roof of my house was blown off, and many other houses were also affected,” he said.
According to him, both landlords and tenants across the area were impacted by the disaster, leaving many families struggling to cope with the damage.
Murtala also lamented the financial burden of repairing his property, explaining that he currently lacks the funds needed to restore his home.
“I have to look for money to repair my damaged property, but the pitiable thing is that I do not have the funds anywhere,” he said.
Adeleke Reacts to Incident
Reacting to the development, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed sympathy with residents affected by the rainstorm.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor described the incident as sad and unfortunate.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Osun State, I sincerely sympathise with the victims of the heavy rainstorms occasioned by the devastating downpour,” the statement said.
Adeleke assured residents that the state government would take necessary steps to support victims through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA).
“I feel deeply touched and alarmed by the incident, and my administration will put in place everything possible to mitigate the losses incurred,” he stated.
The governor also directed the Osun State Ministry of Works to immediately clear affected roads in order to prevent accidents and restore free flow of traffic.
Climate Change Concerns
Governor Adeleke linked the rising occurrence of extreme weather events to the effects of climate change, noting that proactive environmental measures are necessary to reduce future risks.
He urged residents to plant more trees and avoid indiscriminate felling of trees, which can worsen the impact of storms and environmental degradation.
The incident comes amid broader weather forecasts across Nigeria.
Earlier, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) released its 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, which warned that many parts of the country, particularly in the southwest, could experience normal to above-normal rainfall during the year.
