Legislators call for the revocation of existing licenses, citing potential risks following a controversial incident in 2014

The House of Representatives has taken a decisive stance against the issuance of licenses for private airstrips, urging the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to revoke any licenses previously granted.

This motion, spearheaded by Honourable Suleiman Gumi, arose in the context of heightened security concerns within the nation.

In a session dedicated to national security, Gumi pointed to a recent approval of an airstrip for Winners Chapel in Ogun State, emphasizing the implications of such approvals.

“Given the prevailing security challenges, allowing private airstrips could pose a significant threat,” he asserted.

The discussion harkened back to a notorious 2014 incident involving a high-profile religious figure linked to the transport of substantial sums of money abroad, raising alarms about potential misuse of privately owned airstrips.

Gumi reiterated, “We cannot afford to overlook the dangers that could arise from unregulated access to our airspace.”
