Aliyu Madaki, a member of the House, expressed concerns over the “gender equality” clause, describing it as a “Trojan horse” that could violate the country’s morals. “We must ensure that our values and beliefs are not compromised,” Madaki said.

The House also mandated its relevant committees to investigate the agreement’s controversial provisions. However, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, reassured Nigerians that the agreement aligns with the country’s Constitution and cultural sensibilities.

“Nigeria signed the agreement to boost food security and inclusive economic development, amongst other objectives,” Bagudu said at a press conference on Saturday.

“We will not enter into an agreement that is antithetical to our Constitution and the religious and cultural sensibilities of our people.”
