  • Nigerians can now monetize WhatsApp by creating and growing a channel with valuable content.
  • Monetization tools include subscriptions, promotions, and Meta Business integration.
  • Eligibility depends on audience size, content quality, and Meta’s rollout timeline.

Following Meta’s introduction of monetization features on WhatsApp, many Nigerian creators, influencers, and digital entrepreneurs are now looking for how to activate this new earning opportunity. If you’re a Nigerian-based user aiming to monetize your WhatsApp activity, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Step 1: Update WhatsApp to the Latest Version

To access monetization tools, make sure you’re using the most recent version of WhatsApp. Head to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, search for WhatsApp, and update the app.

Step 2: Create a WhatsApp Channel

Monetization is currently tied to WhatsApp Channels, not regular chats. To create one:
1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap the Updates tab.
3. Select + (plus icon) or Create Channel.
4. Follow the prompts to set up your channel name, photo, and description.

Step 3: Build Your Audience

You need a sizable and engaged audience to qualify for monetization. Promote your channel on social media, invite contacts, and consistently share valuable content that will grow your subscriber base.

Step 4: Apply for Monetization

Once your channel gains traction:
• Go to Channel Settings.
• Look for the Monetization tab (if available).
• Tap Apply or Join Waitlist if you’re not yet eligible.

Note: Meta may roll this out gradually in Nigeria, so not all users will see the monetization option immediately.

Step 5: Link to Meta Business Tools

To fully benefit:
• Link your WhatsApp Channel to your Meta Business Manager account.
• Ensure you have a valid payment method and tax information set up.

This helps facilitate paid promotions, brand collaborations, and subscription earnings.

Who Can Monetize?
• Influencers with active, topic-driven WhatsApp Channels.
• Small business owners using WhatsApp for customer outreach.
• Content creators producing entertainment, education, or lifestyle content.

Important Tips for Nigerians

• Ensure your phone number is linked to a Nigerian bank account if you want to receive payouts locally.
• Regularly monitor Meta’s announcements to stay updated on Nigeria-specific requirements.
• Avoid copyright violations and harmful content, which can get your channel demonetized.

WhatsApp monetization presents a new way for Nigerians to earn without switching platforms. If used effectively, it could empower content creators across the country to build sustainable digital income streams directly within their communities.

Meta Expands WhatsApp’s Updates Tab with Monetization Features

Meta has announced major updates to WhatsApp’s Updates tab, introducing three new features designed to help creators, organizations, and businesses grow their audience and generate income.

In a statement issued on Monday, the tech giant revealed that the Updates tab — home to both Status and Channels — will now support Channel Subscriptions for exclusive content, Promoted Channels to boost visibility, and Ads in Status for targeted product and service promotions.
