Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has opened up about the heartbreaking loss of her husband and the personal struggles she endured in the aftermath.

In an emotional interview with fellow actress Biola Bayo, Chukwu revealed that she became a widow when her youngest child was just four months old.

She recalled how her husband suffered from a severe illness that not only drained his finances but eventually claimed his life.

“My last child was four months old when their father died. It’s a story that, anytime I try to explain, I cry,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.

Chukwu shared how her husband had been completely transparent with her from the start. “The night that we did our traditional wedding, my husband confided in me. He said in Heaven and Earth, all the money he had home and abroad was eleven thousand naira,” she recalled. “That night, I cried because I felt like where were we going to start? I said it’s not about surviving; I am worried about the fact that it is the sickness that has eaten deep into his capital. And the sickness is still there.”

The actress went on to describe the physical and emotional toll of watching her husband waste away. According to her, his condition deteriorated to the point where people referred to him as a “living corpse.”

“My husband couldn’t eat anything without stooling immediately. Anybody who saw him would call him a living corpse,” she said. “I was running around with a baby on my back. He told me to help him beg his mother to give him mercy death.”

Chukwu also opened up about her life before marriage, describing herself as a tough young woman who had never been in a romantic relationship until she met her late husband.

“Nobody has ever toasted me. My husband was the one who broke my virginity,” she said. “I was stubborn. I was tough to the extent that I don’t think I had somebody say he wanted to date me.”

The period surrounding her husband’s illness was extremely difficult, she said, noting how financial hardship made even basic needs difficult to meet.

“Things were very hard for us; I couldn’t register for antenatal care. At some point, I couldn’t stand up again. After 41 days of welcoming my child, I returned to my business because my husband couldn’t go out again. He was already using the potty at home.”

Following his passing, Chukwu revealed that she stepped away from acting to focus on rebuilding her life. “I took a break for some years. I had to abandon acting for close to eight years, but now I am back,” she said.

Her story sheds light on the hidden battles many people in the public eye silently face, showing her resilience and determination to rise after immense loss.
