Tems replied: “I might have been an accountant or a mathematics teacher.”
Before taking the bold step into music, Tems worked briefly as a digital marketer. She eventually left her job in January 2018 to pursue music full-time. Just months later, she released her debut single, Mr Rebel, which started gaining attention in Nigeria’s fast-growing Afrobeats scene.

Her international breakthrough came when she featured on Wizkid’s hit song Essence, which climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 and later peaked at number 9 after Justin Bieber jumped on the remix. Since then, Tems has continued to rise steadily, achieving global recognition, multiple nominations, and major awards.
Today, Tems stands as one of the most influential figures shaping the evolution of African music. But if life had taken a different turn, she believes she would have found fulfillment in the classroom, teaching numbers and equations.
