ICPC Chairman Reveals N700bn Paid in Bribes in 2023

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, has disclosed that an estimated N700 billion was paid in bribes in 2023, with the frequency of bribes higher in rural areas than in urban areas.

Aliyu emphasized that corruption remains a significant impediment to Nigeria’s development and called for a collective effort to combat it.

Delivering a keynote address at the International Law Conference in Zaria, Aliyu highlighted the social and legal implications of corruption, stressing the need for a comprehensive and sustained approach to address the issue.

He noted that despite challenges, progress is being made, with an increase in citizens reporting bribe payments to official authorities.

Aliyu also emphasized the importance of human rights and social justice in combating corruption and ensuring access to essential services. He urged the judiciary to prioritize continuous education and training to effectively adjudicate cyber-related cases.
