Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated an eight-member committee to drive the implementation of state police.

The committee, chaired by Prof Olu Ogunsakin, will oversee the framework for the controversial state police model and coordinate Disu’s broader vision following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.

Addressing senior officers, Disu emphasised that leadership is “not about position but responsibility,” highlighting professionalism, discipline, and accountability as core policing principles.

He stressed that respect for human rights is non-negotiable and directed that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad operate independently to strengthen internal accountability.

Disu also noted that decentralisation will empower state and local governments to participate in security management, enhancing intelligence gathering and responsiveness to local threats.

The committee’s inauguration coincides with growing calls for state police amid escalating insecurity, including kidnappings, insurgency, and rural attacks.

President Tinubu has urged constitutional amendments to formally establish state police, stressing the need for decentralised forces to reclaim forests from armed groups and secure communities nationwide.
