Defends FCT election curfew, insists action was lawful and approved.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, pledging to back the President’s bid for a second term in office.
Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the declaration on Monday during his first monthly media briefing of 2026 in Abuja.

Criticising his party’s internal wranglings, Wike said the PDP appeared not to have learned from its lingering crisis.
“As it is today, my party seems to have not learned, and I am also going to support the President for a second term in office,” he stated.

The former Rivers State governor clarified that his support is not strictly party-based but aligned with candidates who back the President. According to him, his position remains consistent with the stance he took upon accepting his ministerial appointment.
“I never said I would support that particular party, but I did say I would support candidates who are in favour of Mr President, regardless of which party they are from,” Wike said.
On the recent FCT area council elections, Wike defended the curfew imposed before the February 21 polls, insisting he acted within his authority as FCT Minister and chief security officer of the territory.
He noted that the decision had the approval of President Tinubu.
Responding to criticism over his movements on election day, Wike dismissed suggestions that his presence at a few polling units could influence results across over 3,000 polling units in the FCT.
He said that his actions were purely for security oversight and did not interfere with the electoral process.
