The results were declared at 2 AM on March 1, 2023, with President Bola Tinubu emerging as the winner with 8,794,726 votes.
According to Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the declaration timing was due to the complex logistics of collating results from Nigeria’s vast geographical spread.
The process involves aggregating results from polling units to wards, local governments, states, and finally to the national level in Abuja.
Oyekanmi emphasized that neither the constitution nor the electoral act mandates a specific time for declaring election results, allowing the commission flexibility to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
He explained that the Chairman had to wait for 36 returning officers to present their results, which led to the delay and subsequent declaration at 2 AM.
