The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the deletion of 7,746 deceased voters from the national voter register in Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as of December 2022.
According to INEC’s voter education and publicity director, Victoria Etta-Messi, “Problems with official death records continue to make it very difficult for INEC to remove deceased registrants.”
The commission used the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to identify and remove fake or duplicate voter registrations, and the process revealed a whopping 2.7 million registrations were invalid – about 22.6 percent of all new registrants.
The INEC stated its commitment to making the voter registration process more secure and reliable.
