INEC Schedules February 21 for Rivers State Bye-Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced February 21, 2026, as the date for bye-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II State Constituencies of Rivers State. The decision was reached during an extraordinary commission meeting held on Monday in Abuja.

The Ahoada East II seat became vacant following the resignation of its representative, while the Khana II seat was left open due to the death of the lawmaker. The Speaker of the State House of Assembly had previously notified INEC of the vacancies.

During the meeting, INEC also reviewed preparations for the end-of-tenure Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, scheduled for the same date.

The commission has released a detailed timetable for the bye-elections in line with its constitutional mandate under Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution.

The schedule includes:

  • Notice of elections: January 22, 2026

  • Political party primaries & dispute resolution: January 23–27

  • Campaign period: February 8–19

INEC urged political parties and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the timetable to ensure smooth and credible elections in the affected constituencies.
