The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria.

INEC had earlier scheduled the elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections were initially slated for March 6, 2027.

However, the commission has now adjusted the timetable, with governorship and State Assembly elections to hold on February 6, 2027.

The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, announced the new dates in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, explaining that the adjustment followed concerns raised over the earlier schedule.

Several Nigerians, particularly within the Muslim community, had expressed concerns that the previous February date coincided with the Ramadan fasting period, warning that it could affect voter participation and election logistics.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad were among prominent voices who urged INEC to reconsider the earlier timetable in order to ensure wider participation in the electoral process.

INEC said the revised timetable forms part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections and is aimed at ensuring smooth and inclusive electoral activities nationwide.
