Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has said the ongoing insurgency in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East, is not overwhelming the nation’s military forces.

Buratai made the assertion during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, where he assessed the current state of the fight against insurgency and banditry.

“I don’t see that the insurgency is somehow overwhelming the troops. We are okay. Now we have more enablers in terms of drones,” he said.

The retired Lieutenant-General noted that the military has recorded improvements through the deployment of additional operational platforms, but stressed that more resources are still required to sustain progress.

“A lot of platforms have been injected but the military still needs more of such platforms and the enablers,” he added.

Buratai, however, identified key operational challenges, particularly the vast geographical spread of the North-East, which he said continues to stretch military capacity.

“If you look at the landmass of the Northeast only, it’s quite enormous… the troops are so dispersed. Manpower and equipment are challenges,” he stated.

His comments come amid ongoing security operations across the region, where troops continue to confront insurgents and armed groups.
