• Fresh bombardment raises fears of wider Middle East conflict
Israel has launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Tehran, Iran’s capital, following reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during earlier joint attacks by Israeli and United States forces.
The Israeli military said on Sunday that its air force carried out extensive strikes in the heart of Tehran after earlier operations aimed at opening a path into the Iranian capital.
The new attacks have heightened fears of widespread instability and escalation of conflict across the Middle East.

Iranian state media reportedly confirmed that the 86-year-old Supreme Leader died hours after the initial airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
Under Iran’s constitution, the Supreme Leader is appointed by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body responsible for supervising the leadership.
Reports also indicated that Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, was among senior officials killed during the strikes.
