Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province(ISWAP) have attacked a Nigerian military camp in Pulka, Borno State, triggering fresh security concerns in the North-East.

Residents said the assault occurred late Saturday night and lasted for about one and a half hours.

Eyewitnesses reported sustained gunfire across the town as the attackers engaged troops.

Local sources indicated that the facility was set ablaze during the raid.

Several casualties are feared among military personnel, although authorities have yet to release official figures.

Security operatives reportedly mobilised in response, but details of any counter-offensive were still sketchy as of press time.

The development follows a separate incident on Friday in Doro Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.

Armed insurgents suspected to be Boko Haram/ISWAP members abducted five residents at a fish market around 7 a.m.

The victims were identified as Alhaji Sani Boyi, Bullama Dan Umaru, Baba Inusa, Abubakar Jan Boris and Mallam Shaibu.

Security sources said troops of Operation HADIN KAI, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters, responded after distress calls from residents.

Communities around the Lake Chad axis have continued to witness sporadic attacks despite ongoing military operations in the region.
