An Italian citizen, Filippo Ferlazzo has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the death of a 39-year-old Nigerian man, Alika Ogorchukwu.

The incident occurred in July 2022 in a coastal city in the Marche region of Italy.

The Nigerian Mission in Rome, under the leadership of Abike Dabiri-Erewa, played a commendable role in ensuring that justice was served.

The attack took place on July 29, 2022, when Ogorchukwu was assaulted while he was hawking.

Ferlazzo used Ogorchukwu’s crutches to beat him to death in broad daylight, while several onlookers recorded the incident.

The Italian police arrested Ferlazzo the following day on charges of murder and theft.

The motive for the attack was reportedly a disagreement over a handkerchief.

The incident took place at 2 p.m. on a Friday in the main central street of Civitanova Marche.

Ogorchukwu was found dead at the scene by paramedics.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa disclosed his satisfaction with the outcome of the case.

Dabiri-Erewa said:

“I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there have to be consequences for actions.”
