The Ijaw Youth Council, Ogulagha Clan has extended sympathies to the management of Britannia-U Nigeria Limited over a fire incaident that consumed a drilling vessel belonging to the company.
Daily Report Nigeria reports that the inferno engulfed the drilling vessel at the Ajakpa Field (OML 90) on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
Reacting to the incident, the IYC Ogulagha Clan expressed regret over the unfortunate incident. The youth body also charged the company to put appropriate mitigation efforts to curtail the adverse result of oil spillage on both the ecological and aquatic environment.

“The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Ogulagha Clan, expresses our deepest sympathies to Britannia-U Nigeria Limited over the tragic fire incident on their drilling vessel platform at Ajakpa Field (OML 90), 10.77 nautical miles south of Forcados Terminal in Delta State, Nigeria, which occurred on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
“We recognize the significant operational and financial losses incurred by Britannia-U Nigeria Limited as a result of this unfortunate event. We extend our heartfelt regret to all affected stakeholders, including the employees, contractors, and management, who are experiencing profound distress during this challenging period.
“However, it is with a heavy heart that we lament the severe damage this incident has caused to the ecological and aquatic environment of the Ogulagha Kingdom.
“The impact on our marine life, water quality, and the livelihood of our people, who rely on these natural resources, cannot be overstated.
“The IYC is deeply concerned about the long-term effects on our environment and community.
“In light of this, we call upon Britannia-U Nigeria Limited to institute an effective situation-based response plan tailored to address oil spillage and related incidents in the marine environment of Ogulagha Kingdom.
“It is imperative that comprehensive measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences and to ensure swift and effective mitigation should such incidents happen again. The protection of our environment and the well-being of our people must be prioritized in all operational activities.
“We look forward to working collaboratively with Britannia-U Nigeria Limited and relevant authorities to ensure the restoration and preservation of our cherished environment. Our community stands ready to support all efforts aimed at achieving this noble objective.”
