IYC Warns Police Against Assault, Unlawful Arrest of Ijaw Youths

The Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone has warned security operatives particularly the police to shun the assault and unlawful arrest of its members across the Niger Delta.

The warning was issued by the IYC Western Zone Chairman, Comrade Nicholas Igarama on Thursday in Warri at the end of a peacebuilding meeting with the Agbarho Police Division.

The meeting followed the attempted assault and brutalisation of the Chairman by police officers attached to the division.

In a reconciliatory process that involved the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, DSP Edafe Bright; the Agbarho Divisional Officer, CSP Josephine Emenike; IYC National Spokesman, Amb. Princewill Binebai; IYC Speaker, Bob Collins Igetei; IYC National Financial Secretary, Victor Gow Ayibatari and Elder Fred Afoegba; amongst others.

Igarama tasked the police to uphold regard for human rights at all times and shun the unprofessional practice of intimidation, assault and unlawful arrest of law abiding citizens.

The Chairman stressed that “Ijaws youths are by far the most law abiding among their counterparts across the country. For that sake, we urge the police to be at its professional best at all times.”

Igarama called to mind the case of Mr. Tammy Okubama, an Ijaw youth, who was beaten to death by police officers attached to Rainoil Filling Station, Ebrumede in the early hours of August 25, 2023.

He warned that petty excesses of police operatives will not be tolerated by all stratas of Council, charging the force at their best habitually.

Continuing, Igarama expressed the “readiness of the Ijaw Youth Council Western Zone to corporate with all law enforcement agencies within the zone to ensure peace, law and order with emphasis on Ijaw areas.”

On her part, the CSP Emenike expressed regret over the action of the officers involved in the assault of the Chairman, promising to adequately investigate the incident to the latter and mete out appropriate punishment where need be.
