The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denounced the detention of its President, Joe Ajaero as a “brazen act of intimidation and completely unjustified under the laws of our nation.”
Recall that Ajaero was seized and whisked away by agents of the Department of State Service (DSS) while “en route to the United Kingdom (UK) to attend a global gathering of workers.”
The NLC announced that his whereabouts and health status remained unknown after hours of his arrest.
It argued that Ajaero is not a fugitive and has not been declared wanted by any law enforcement body.

The NLC viewed this development as a demonstration of the Nigerian government’s “height of lawlessness” in silencing dissenting voices and opposition.
As a result, the organization has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ajaero and an end to all forms of harassment against labour leaders and the Nigerian working class.
It also called for the release of all Nigerians detained for exercising their democratic rights to protest.
Furthermore, NLC called on the international community, human rights organizations, and all advocates of democracy to take note of this “rising wave of authoritarianism” in Nigeria.
