Speculation continues as Jonathan begins quiet nationwide consultations
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected claims that he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race, describing such reports as baseless.
The clarification came after a Newsweek Nigeria publication alleged that Jonathan had stepped aside to preserve Southern political unity, a claim that quickly gained traction online.
Jonathan, who has not officially declared his candidacy, is said to be holding quiet consultations across the country as part of his political calculations ahead of the election.
In a statement released on Facebook, Jonathan’s cousin, Azibaola Robert, dismissed the report as entirely false and misleading. He explained that the article titled “Jonathan Rejects Pressure to Contest in 2027, Says He Won’t Be Used Against Southern Unity” contained fabricated claims.

Robert further clarified that references to an alleged aide of Jonathan were fictitious, insisting that no such person exists and urging Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety.
He stressed that Jonathan has neither ruled himself out of the race nor made any declaration to withdraw, adding that those pushing such claims were only advancing selfish political interests.
