Jos School Collapse: FG Provides Aid to Grieving Families

The Federal Government, via the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), distributed food supplies on Tuesday to the families of victims and survivors of the tragic collapse of the Saint Academy School building in Jos.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the collapse, which occurred on 12 July 2024, resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals and injuries to 54 others.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, stated that the initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of survivors and the families of those who lost their lives.

Represented by the NEMA North Central Coordinator, Eugene Nyelong, Umar upheld the agency’s active involvement in the rescue operations following the incident.

Describing the collapse as a deeply emotional event for both parents and NEMA, she said:
We are sending our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to those who got injured and families of those who lost loved ones.”

NEMA’s DG detailed the agency’s response, adding that an assessment was conducted based on the search and rescue activities on the day of the collapse.

She clarified that following approval, NEMA distributed medical supplies to hospitals treating the injured and is now providing essential food items to 41 affected households.

The Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, Sunday Abdu, appreciated the Federal Government for its support.

Represented by the Director of Finance and Supply, Samson Dimlong, Abdu remarked on the importance of the gesture, acknowledging the Federal Government’s commitment to providing relief.

He said:

The unfortunate incident, being a natural phenomenon, we have nothing to do to stop it, but with this, the families will appreciate the Federal Government for the gesture.”

The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association at the school, Macben Onye, also thanked the government and stakeholders for their continued support since the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, Mrs Ifeyinwa Okwubanego, mother of the late Christabel Okwubanego who perished in the collapse, poignantly said:
Life has never been the same without her loving daughter.”
