  • Attack hits Wannune, Senator Akume’s hometown, barely 48 hours after President Tinubu’s security tour

  • Several feared dead, corps member raises alarm as locals flee into the bush

  • Tinubu’s visit under scrutiny as renewed killings cast doubt on government control

Suspected armed herdsmen have launched a deadly attack on Wannune, the hometown of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

The assault occurred just two days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state, where he met with stakeholders and issued security directives to halt killings in the region.

According to reports, the attack left multiple residents dead and others severely injured. A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in the area described the incident as chaotic and terrifying.

“Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please let Nigerians pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging the environment now,” the corps member said in an SOS message calling for urgent intervention.

This renewed wave of violence comes shortly after President Tinubu visited Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 persons were massacred in Yelewata. The mass killing triggered nationwide outrage and condemnation.

During the visit, Tinubu reportedly directed the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to hunt down the perpetrators and end the bloodshed in the state.

However, the latest attack in Wannune raises serious concerns about the impact and immediacy of the President’s orders, as communities continue to suffer under repeated herdsmen invasions.

Security operatives have yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
