The Managing Director of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), Dr. Mustafa Sugungun, has announced that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Kaduna refinery, under the $741 million Quick Fix Project, is on schedule for completion by the end of 2024.

The project, being executed by South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction, is expected to restore production at the refinery to at least 60% of its 110,000 barrels-per-day capacity.

Dr. Sugungun, represented by the Manager of Operations, Mr. Emmanuel Ajiboye, made the announcement during the commissioning of renovated facilities in Rido community, Kaduna State.

The event, which included the unveiling of a solar-powered borehole and the renovation of Rido Community Primary School, was part of KRPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at uplifting host communities.

“The success of the Quick Fix Project will not only restore the refinery’s production capacity but will also create significant economic opportunities, including job creation and the growth of local businesses,” Dr. Sugungun said. “We are committed to the sustainable development of our host communities, and this project is a testament to that commitment.”

The Quick Fix Project is a critical part of efforts to revitalize the nation’s ailing refineries, with the Kaduna refinery among those prioritized for rehabilitation. Once operational, the facility will play a pivotal role in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products.

Mr. Ajiboye further emphasized that the company’s CSR initiatives, including the renovation of the Rido Primary School and provision of clean water, reflect KRPC’s ongoing dedication to enhancing the living standards of surrounding communities.

“The borehole will address water scarcity, while the school renovations will improve the learning environment for both pupils and teachers,” he said.

The Head Teacher of Rido Primary School, Mrs. Rachael Aduwak, expressed gratitude for the improvements but urged KRPC to provide more support.

“We are thankful for the renovation, but we request additional facilities such as a perimeter fence, tables, chairs, and chalkboards for our classrooms,” she appealed.

As part of its broader community outreach, KRPC has also pledged support for youth empowerment, rural electrification, and medical outreach programs, all aimed at fostering long-term relationships with the local communities.

The ongoing refinery repairs, which are set to reach 60% production capacity by the end of this year, are expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, spurring growth in various sectors and benefiting thousands of Nigerians.
