Tension has erupted within the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, following a clash between the party chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Attah, over public remarks relating to the 2027 governorship race.

The crisis reportedly began after Attah allegedly endorsed Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau as the APC’s preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano. The endorsement was said to have been made without consultation with the party leadership.

In a letter addressed to the minister, Abbas described Attah’s comments as “unguarded”, warning that such statements could fuel misunderstanding and disunity within the party. He stressed that internal party matters fall strictly under the APC leadership and its appointed spokespersons, adding that non-compliance could attract disciplinary consequences.

Responding through his publicity aide, Seyi Olorunsola, the minister defended his remarks as legitimate expressions of his democratic rights. Attah insisted that his statements were personal assessments meant to provide strategic political insight, not official party declarations.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu, noting that his endorsement of Senator Barau was a patriotic opinion on the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 elections, and not an attempt to override established party structures.

Attah also cautioned against portraying internal disagreements as political crises, especially at a time when Nigeria faces pressing security challenges.

He said his comments were informed by extensive grassroots engagement and intended to stimulate healthy political debate within the party ahead of formal nomination processes.
