The Kano State of Assembly has commenced the process of further amendment of the state’s Penal Code (No.12), 2014 law, in order to make castration a penalty for rape offenders in the state.

The proposal was made following a motion presented on Wednesday, by a lawmaker “Nuradden Al-hassan”, seeking to review the law.

During a plenary presided over by the state Speaker, Abdulazeez Gafasa, majority of the assembly members were unified in their decision.

While emphasizing that the current 14-year jail term punishment for rape offenders was not enough, Al-hassan called for review of the law so as to reflect a stricter and harsher punishment for rapists in the state.

Al-hassan noted that the law amendment was necessary so as to end the rampant rape cases in the state.

He further enjoined the House to look into security challenges in the state so as to strengthen efforts in tackling rape cases in the state.
