The Kano State Government has instructed the State Hisba Board to commence preparations for the marriage of no fewer than 2,000 couples under its mass wedding scheme, which is aimed at promoting social welfare and discouraging immoral practices.

The directive, issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, was confirmed by the board’s Deputy Commander-General, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, who noted that the programme was reintroduced to support widows, divorcees, and unmarried women struggling with financial challenges.

Sheikh Aminudeen disclosed that preparations were already in progress to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming ceremony.

“We are planning to conduct a mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he said.

Although the exact date of the event has yet to be announced, the Hisba official assured that due process would be followed to guarantee fairness and transparency throughout the exercise.

He explained that all intending couples must undergo compulsory medical screening before participating. The health checks would include HIV/AIDS and hepatitis tests, genotype verification, and drug-use assessments. Any candidate who fails to comply will be disqualified.

“All prospective couples must first register to be part of the programme,” Aminudeen added. “Medical screening is a compulsory requirement, and anyone who fails to undergo it will not be allowed to participate.”

Governor Yusuf’s administration revived the scheme, previously suspended under past governments, to support low-income families and help vulnerable groups—especially widows, divorcees, and spinsters whose families cannot afford marriage expenses.

According to officials, the programme is intended not only to encourage family stability but also to uphold Islamic values, reduce prostitution, and curb other social vices among young people.

The Hisba Board will oversee the process from registration and screening to the official ceremony, ensuring compliance with all requirements before couples are formally wedded.

Sheikh Aminudeen described the initiative as a “moral and social intervention” that underscores the government’s commitment to reducing societal problems while enabling the less privileged to fulfill a vital aspect of life.

The Kano State mass wedding initiative, first introduced over a decade ago, has facilitated thousands of marriages, with government sponsorship covering costs such as dowries, wedding outfits, and household essentials.
