In a sorrowful development, the Kano State Government announced it will provide a ₦1 million relief package to every family of the 22 athletes and sports officials who perished in a road crash.
The group was en route back from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident took place.

Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, addressing the state’s sentiments, conveyed deep anguish over the catastrophic loss.
He made the declaration during a visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the majority of the victims’ remains were being held.
> “This is a heartbreaking moment for Kano and for Nigeria as a whole. These young athletes had just proudly represented our state—some returning with gold medals. Tragically, their journey ended just kilometers away from home,” Gwarzo said.
Prompt Financial and Welfare Aid Assured
Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo underscored the administration’s dedication to alleviate the hardships faced by the grieving households.
He affirmed that the ₦1 million assistance would be distributed expeditiously.
Moreover, the government will supply food and other relief items to support the families during this challenging period.
> “The Governor has directed immediate financial assistance to all the grieving families, as well as the best available medical treatment for those injured,” the Deputy Governor added.
Continued Medical Assistance for Survivors
During his visit to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Gwarzo also checked on seven wounded athletes who were under treatment.

He pledged that the government would foot all medical bills and extend continuous support to facilitate their recuperation.
> “Twenty of the victims have been identified at the hospital; two others have already been taken home by their families,” he noted. “We will stand by all affected families and manage this tragedy with compassion and responsibility.”

Wrapping up his remarks, Gwarzo conveyed the Governor’s and the state’s heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.
“On behalf of Governor Yusuf and all Kano citizens, we offer our prayers. May Almighty Allah forgive the deceased and grant them eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.”
