Edo State was thrown into chaos Wednesday night after a violent clash broke out between Hausa and Benin youths following the killing of a suspected internet fraudster in Ogheghe community, Egor Local Government Area. The confrontation sparked fear across nearby communities, forcing businesses to shut down and residents to flee for safety.
Trouble began when Chizi Benz, a young man allegedly involved in internet fraud, was reportedly stabbed to death after a dispute with another youth said to be of northern origin. News of Chizi’s death spread quickly, and within minutes, groups of angry Benin youths stormed the streets, accusing northerners in the area of being responsible.

Armed with sticks, machetes, and stones, the mob moved from street to street in Ogheghe, attacking anyone they believed to be from the North. Several people were injured as residents abandoned their homes and sought safety in nearby communities.
The unrest soon extended to Uwelu, along the Siluko road axis. Shops owned by northern traders were immediately shut down, and motorcycle riders who operate within the area disappeared from the streets to avoid being caught in the chaos.
Police patrol teams arrived later and fired tear gas to disperse the rioters. Officers remained on the ground afterward, attempting to prevent a fresh outbreak of violence.

Spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident and assured that a full statement would be released after the police conclude their findings. As of the time of this report, tension remains high, and security teams are closely monitoring Ogheghe and surrounding areas to prevent retaliation.
